Acupuncture and Chronic CRPS1: promising results

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome type 1 (CRPS1) is a complex entity comprising a combination of sensory, trophic, autonomic and motor impairments that usually follows trauma or surgery and is generally expressed in the extremities. CRPS1 is a major cause of invalidation after an injury or operation. This study is focused on the acupuncture treatment of chronic CRPS1 patients, to suppress chronic pain and  to improve the clinical outcome, as Skin temperature (fig 1), Pain Intensity (fig 2)and Quality of life (fig 3).

In this study, 14 acupuncture treatments are given in 26 weeks, in addition to the Physical Therapy: 6 every week, then 6 every 14 days and at last 2 every 30 days.

With a patient population of chronic CRPS1 who find themselves in a stage of not responding to any therapeutic intervention these results are promising.
Although these results were obtained from an open labelled Pilot-study in which three patients were included, the long-term effects clearly show that the differences in temperature between the affected hand and the healthy hand decrease significantly. Therefore we might conclude that acupuncture is a complementary way of treating CPRS1.
In the coming year we want to expend this number up till 64 patients. This in a Randomised, single blinded, Clinical Trial. Already 12 patients are included and treated.
